A guide to life after leaving the Brahma Kumaris

Home

Point of view

We advocate neither membership in BKs nor departure from the group. We provide these resources to support individuals in understanding for themselves and making their own decisions.

Personal stories

Despite ominous predictions of ruin for those who the BKs say have "divorced God" by leaving the group, many ex-BKs continue to grow into mature, confident, fulfilled adults with rich, satisfying relationships, successful careers, loving families.

Equally many find it necessary to deal with personal problems by taking the support of therapists. Issues may have begun long before joining the BKs, may have developed out of difficulties during our tenure in the group, or may be connected with changing relationships, values and world view after leaving the BKs.

Here we include a collection of personal accounts of those who have left.

Cult related resources

Here are a few links on cult-related subjects. There are literally thousands of websites devoted to cult behavior, although few that include cultlike elements in established religions, political parties, schools, corporate environments, etc. Perhaps it is a dynamic of our world for people to be drawn between groupthink environments of consensual reality and independent self awareness.

Sexuality

A frequent target of cult doctrines and dogma is sexuality. Generally the criticism is broad, covering physical/mental/emotional activity by oneself and with others, or spoken or published in written form, on TV and in movies.

There are good reasons to believe that repressing healthy sexuality is much more damaging than embracing it as a central component of human behavior.

For newcomers

If you have just discovered this site you may want to start off with personal stories or go straight to the Classic Posts. In the Classic Posts you will find three years of vivid writing on topics relevant to ex-Bks and others, such as family members of BKs. Also do check out the humor section. All the BEST!
